3 Ways to Teach Your Child Healthy Eating

kid being looked at by doctorThe statistics on childhood obesity are worrisome. In some cases, statistics indicate that as many as 10 percent of children age four to five are overweight, twice the amount from 20 years prior. As children get older, that number increases as well. Now, one in five kids between the ages of six and 11 are overweight. Health insurance claims for children needing diabetic medications are increasing as well. It's a clear indication of the risks kids face. So, what can be done about it?

You can take steps to help your child remain healthy. It all comes from healthy eating and a solid level of physical fitness. As you consider the way you feed your children, you may be wondering how you can make a change. These tips can help you not only to change their diet, but also to teach them why.

Make it a Family Event

One of the most important things you need to do to ensure your child is eating well is to make sure everyone in the family is doing the same thing. Instead of making it seem like a punishment, this turns it into a goal for the family. It's a team effort! As kids get older, it is more important than ever that they are taught the importance of nutrition. Ensure everyone in the family is learning right along with them.

Make Eating Veggies Fun

If your child doesn't eat enough fruits and veggies, it may be time to look for a few new ways to incorporate them. For example, explain to your eight-year-old (or older) child the value of each type of vegetable. What does a carrot offer you? Improved vision. For younger children, cut them into easy to eat bites and offer some low-calorie dips. Interactive eating is always fun.

Teach Older Kids the Value of a Balanced Meal

Older kids want to know why. Discuss how to choose a healthy protein. Discuss the importance of eating various types of carbohydrates.

The more information your child has about how to eat well and why it matters, the more likely they will be to stick to a healthy meal plan. Make junk food is something that's not in the house, or only in sparse amounts as a treat. Doing this can help make it possible for everyone to eat well.
